About the Nursing Program

Make a difference in the lives of others by joining an incredible profession that is both exciting and rewarding!

UMFK’s fully accredited baccalaureate nursing program is founded upon the liberal arts and sciences. Over the course of study, students gain knowledge and skill in the social, behavioral, biological, and nursing sciences. This program of study fosters the personal and professional growth of students, enhancing the creative and intellectual abilities of those who wish to pursue advanced clinical and academic studies.

Each nursing major must complete a minimum of 120 hours of credit, including the general education core, nursing prerequisites, and nursing core courses as outlined in the individual program plan. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing and is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Traditional BSN Track

The traditional BSN track is for students who transition from high school to college, students who wish to transfer with some credit earned from other academic institutions, or as non-traditional students who wish to be considered for previously-earned academic credit and/or life experience.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) Track

This track is intended for students who have already earned a bachelor's degree. The majority of courses are in nursing and typically takes a minimum of 14 months to complete.

RN to BSN Track

The RN to BSN option is for those who already are licensed Registered Nurses. This completely online program is designed to be as flexible and responsive to individual student needs as possible. This program typically takes a minimum of two years to complete.

MSN Online

UMFK's Master of Science in Nursing program is 100% online. This option is ideal for those who already have their bachelor's degree and wish to pursue a master's degree. This program will open in Summer 2022.

The MSN program will open with a concentration in Adult-Gerontology. Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners manage complex patient situations in faced-paced settings. As an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, you will provide care to patients over age 18, including older adults, both in hospitals and clinics. As you care for acutely ill patients, you will use evidence-based practice to assess patients, provide complex monitoring, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop complex treatment plans. You will focus on managing ongoing problems and preventing complications to support the best patient care outcomes.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, BSN

RN to MSN in Nursing Tracks

The RN to MS in Nursing tracks allow you to complete your undergraduate coursework through the University of Maine at Fort Kent, then complete your graduate coursework through the University of Southern Maine. With this efficient program design, you save time and money by taking fewer courses than if you were to earn your BSN and master's separately. Two program options are available: Nursing Education and Nursing Administration and Leadership.
