Awards and scholarships were presented to deserving University of Maine at Fort Kent students at the senior class banquet and awards convocation held on Friday, May 12 in the UMFK Sports Center.              

The annual event, held the evening prior to commencement, is designed to honor graduating students for outstanding achievement throughout their years at the University and to award underclassmen, who are continuing their education at UMFK, with financial assistance in recognition of their hard work and campus involvement.              

The first awards presented were the outstanding senior honors given by the UMFK Student Senate and the University’s Alumni Association. Receiving the top student award, voted upon by members of the Student Senate, is Sara Lea Hebert (Biddeford, ME).  The UMFK Alumni Association Outstanding Senior Award was presented to Nikola Vukosavovic (Bar, Montenegro).              

The Teacher Education Award, given in recognition of academic excellence and expected future contributions within the area in education, was presented to Jessica Lynne Sirois (Fort Kent, ME).              

Georgii Safonov (Kiev, Ukraine) was awarded the Performing Arts Award, which is given to a student, who has made major contributions and outstanding achievements in university theatre and musical productions.       

The Gretchen Prize in Fine Arts, which recognizes a student who shows exceptional initiative and industry in the visual arts, was awarded to Ellen Borges (Fort Kent, ME) and Shelagh Mairead Van Anglen (Daphne, AL).

Cynthia M. Wailus (Penobscot, ME) was named the recipient of the Roland A. Burns Award in the Arts and Humanities. The award is given in recognition of academic excellence and expected future contributions within the area of the arts and humanities degree program.

Kaye Paula Lozier (Wallagrass, ME) was honored with the Behavioral Science Award, which is given to an academically-strong graduating senior, who has either majored or minored in the behavioral sciences program.

Cole Hunter Porter (Sherman, ME) was presented the Environmental Studies Award for his outstanding achievement and work in his area of study.

The Biology Award was presented to Emma Kathleen Ashby (London, Ontario, Canada) which is given to a student in recognition of academic excellence and expected future contributions within the area of biology.

The Information Security Award was presented to Danny Arthur Mitchell Jr. (Gouldsboro, ME) for his excellence in the study of information security.

Jamie Alexander Reid (Paisley, Great Britain) was named the recipient of the Computer Applications Award, for his high grade point average in computer science courses and future growth and development potential in the computer applications field.

The Business Management Award was presented to Scott Jason Michaud (Caribou, ME) and Nikola Vukosavovic (Bar, Montenegro) for their outstanding work completing the degree program.

Lucas E. Anderson (Patten, ME) received the Criminal Justice Award for his academic achievement and demonstrated active in the discipline.

The Conservation Law Enforcement Award was given to Taylor Reid Woodbury (Greene, ME) in recognition of academic excellence and future contributions within the area of conservation law enforcement.           

The student award in the Rural Public Safety Administration program was presented to Isaac Milton Young (Lincolnville, ME).

Three separate awards were presented to UMFK nursing students. The Outstanding Traditional Nursing Award was presented to Shani J. Healey (Jefferson, ME) and Alexandra Lee Macalle (Raleigh, NC). Anne Marie Grandchamp (Cumberland Center, ME) was awarded the Outstanding RN-BSN Award. The Outstanding Accelerated Nursing Award was presented to Kaitlyn Megan Dorazio (York, ME) and Christopher David Haake (Washington, DC).

The Faculty Academic Achievement Awards were presented to Valedictorian Isacc Milton Young (Lincolnville, ME) and Salutatorian Emma Kathleen Ashby (London, Ontario, Canada).

Daniel James Dudar (Lebanon, CT) earned the Associate of Arts Academic Achievement Award for his outstanding work toward attaining a two-year degree.

The Dean's Award, which is awarded to a junior or senior student with a high grade point average and has demonstrated scholarly attributes, was presented to Shannon Marie Smith (South Portland, ME).

Alexander Gregory Gillis (Nashville Plantation, ME) and Brady H. Haynes (Winn, ME) were presented the Thomas S. Pinkham Memorial Scholarship.

Meagan Morgan Pelletier (St. John Plantation, ME) was presented with the John L. Martin Environmental Scholarship.

The Presidential Award for Academic Excellence is awarded to students who have achieved the Dean's List for seven consecutive semesters. Awards were presented by UMFK President John N. Short to Emma Kathleen Ashby (London, Ontario, Canada); Jessica Ann Boynton (Frenchville, ME); Courtney Lyn Bubier (Jay, ME); Kristen Irene Champagne (Perry, ME); Julia Marie DeStefano (North Monmouth, ME); Michaella Elizabeth Gilbert (Greenville, ME); Kaye Paula Lozier (Wallagrass, ME); Alexa Jesse Massey (Caribou, ME); Brianna Mills (Deux-Montagnes, Quebec, Canada); Marie-Laurence Montagne (Rosemere, Quebec, Canada); Amanda Theresa Pilecki (North Berwick, ME); Jamie Alexander Reid (Paisley, Great Britain); Morgan Marie Thomas (Buxton, ME); Shelagh Mairead Van Anglen (Daphne, AL); and Isaac Milton Young II (Lincolnville, ME).

The Haenssler Prize Award, which is given to a graduating senior who has shown courage in overcoming all obstacles in achieving high academic standing, was presented to Orufonomoh Mary Trudeau (Warri Delta State, Nigeria).   

The senior class honored Diane Griffin, assistant professor of nursing in adult health, with the Outstanding Faculty Award and Wilda Kelly, facilities maintenance worker, was honored as the Outstanding Staff Award for the 2016 - 2017 academic year.
