UMFK Acadian Archives/Archives acadiennes to Host Five-Week Course Titled: "History of Acadia and the St. John Valley"

Lise PelletierLise Pelletier, director of the Acadian Archives/Archives acadiennes at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, will teach a special five-week, ten hour course titled, History of Acadia and the St. John Valley, starting on January 18 and meeting every Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm until February 15, 2017.

This course is of special interest to anyone who wants a better understanding of local history and how it shaped the St. John Valley.  Topics in the course will include the founding of Acadie and the first French settlements in America; the Golden Age of Acadie; the Great Upheaval and migrations of the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s; the Aroostook Boarder Conflict; and topics pertaining to modern Acadian history.

Course instructor Lise Pelletier said, "There are many myths and misconceptions about Acadia and the first non-Native families of the St. John Valley. This is an excellent opportunity to learn what was never taught in school."

Students in this course may take the course as a non-credit class or may also chose to earn one CEU – Continuing Education Unit for the class.  School teachers interested in this course have the added opportunity to have the cost of the class and the cost of the CEU reimbursed by the Maine Acadian Heritage Council if those costs are not fully covered by their school districts.

Lise Pelletier graduated from the Université de Moncton, campus of Edmundston in 1993 with a double Bachelor of Arts in English and French. She has a professional teaching certificate from the state of Maine in Teaching French K-12. She obtained her Master of Arts in French from the University of Maine in 2002. She completed two years of coursework for a Ph.D. in French.
