"Tournées French Film Festival" at UMFK

The Tournées French Film Festival will begin on Sunday, April 17 and will run through Wednesday, April 27. All films will be shown at the University of Maine Fort Kent's Nadeau Hall conference room.

The festival will feature a series of six different contemporary French language films over a two-week period. The films will be shown in French, with English subtitles. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

UMFK Assistant Professor of French and festival organizer Dr. Nicole Boudreau said, “I've chosen six very different films for the Tournées festival in the hopes that there will be something for everyone – I'm really looking forward to it!”

The first film of the festival will be “The King and the Mockingbird,” to be shown on Sunday, April 17 at 3 p.m., is an animated fantasy film of a chimney sweep and a shepherdess seeking to escape from the clutches of a tyrannical king. "The King and the Mockingbird" has been called one of the greatest animated films produced in France. Unrated in the USA but rated “Universal, suitable for all” in the UK.

The second film is “M. Lazhar” will be shown on Tuesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. At a Montréal public grade school, an Algerian immigrant is hired to replace a popular teacher who committed suicide in her classroom. While helping his students deal with their grief, his own recent loss is revealed. Rated PG 13 – parents strongly cautioned.

The third film will be “Augustine,” a French historical drama examining the relationship between a 19th century French neurologist and his teenage patient. To be shown on Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. Unrated in the USA but rated “Unsuitable for viewers under 15 years of age” in the UK.

On Sunday, April 24 at 7 p.m., the fourth film shown will be “The Assault.” An action-packed suspenseful film about a French counter-terrorist offensive on a hijacked airplane. Rated R – Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

On Tuesday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m., you will see “Blue is the Warmest Color.” Adele's life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself and ultimately finds herself through love and loss. Rated NC-17 – Adults only.

The last film of the festival to be shown on Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. is “Polisse,” A crime/drama film centered on the Child Protection Unit (Brigade de Protection des Mineurs) of the Paris Police, and a photographer who is assigned to cover the unit. Unrated in the USA but rated “Unsuitable for viewers under 15 years of age” in the UK.
