UMFK named to the 2016 list of Military Friendly® Schools

A 2016 military-friendly schoolA group that advocates for the education of military veterans has awarded the University of Maine at Fort Kent the designation of a 2016 Military Friendly® School. The Military Friendly® Schools list identifies top colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace military students, and which dedicate resources to ensure this success both in the classroom and after graduation.

Victory Media, the leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds, and publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM JobsSM, and Military Spouse, made the announcement on Thursday, November 5.

UMFK Interim President John Murphy said, “We owe our veterans a great deal of gratitude for serving this country on our behalf. Therefore, we are delighted to provide some assistance to help them transition back to civilian life. If entering or returning to university is one of their goals, we have trained staff ready to assist them with that process.”

Veterans can find the university's officials who certify veterans on the UMFK campus in Cyr Hall. Registrar Mark Schenk and Transfer Officer Kerry Hafford are located at The One Stop, a central location for students seeking assistance. All veterans seeking VA funding can receive help to complete the Veterans Request for Certification (obtainable from the registrar) prior to the beginning of each term.

The small class sizes and personal one-on-one interaction between students and faculty are key elements in helping veterans move forward after their stint in the military comes to an end. An education at UMFK can be a stepping stone to success for armed forces personnel who are seeking certifications, degrees or simply wanting to pause to consider their options before plunging into civilian life.

The designation as military friendly is another accolade to the University's growing list of achievements.

This year, UMFK claimed the title of a Best Northeastern College for the eleventh-consecutive year among colleges and universities in “The Princeton Review.” UMFK is one of 225 outstanding colleges and universities that “The Princeton Review” recommends to college applicants in its 2016 print and online editions.

UMFK also advanced in position as a Top Public College in the North region, according to the U.S. News and World Report 2016 rankings. The latest U.S. News and World Report rankings put UMFK in the top tier, ranked 37th. That ranks UMFK as 13th among public colleges in the North and follows five-consecutive years as a top-15 public institution.

Each of these designations originate from nationally-recognized and highly-respected publications that students and parents alike use to select an institution of higher learning.
