The University of Maine at Fort Kent's Presidential Lecture Series committee is hosting a writing contest entitled, Rivers, Lands & Forests. Submissions from UMFK students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members are welcome.

Are you up to the challenge of writing a story about bird watching, camping, canoeing, cycling, fishing, hiking, hunting, kayaking, photographing, swimming, snow shoeing, skiing, walking, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of our area?

In less than 600 words, “paint” a picture in polished prose or poetry about your memorable experience or reflection on the theme: “Rivers, Lands, & Forests.” The more descriptive and detailed you can make your writing, the better. What is the setting or landscape? What fish, birds, animals, or people are in the story? What did you see, hear, smell, or feel at the time? What happened? How were you affected as a result? Be sure to have your submission proofread and edited.

Anyone who has never won the UMFK writing contest may participate. To enter, simply send your original never-before-published prose or poetry. The deadline to submit your typed, double-spaced entry is 12 noon on Monday, January 6, 2014.

Please include a cover sheet with your contact information, including name, e-mail and phone number, along with a 100-word biography. E-mailed submissions must include “Rivers, Lands, & Forest” as the subject heading. The contest is limited to one entry per person.

All submissions will be read by a jury. Three winning entries will be included in the 2013-14 Presidential Lecture Series Potato Chips ChapBook. In addition, the best entry will be recognized with the Ourson Literary Award, an annual award of $50.
