UMFK One of Ten Campuses in the Country to Host National Geographic Advanced Screening

The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host an advanced screening of the National Geographic series, Chain of Command, on Thursday February 8, 2018 at 6:00pm in Nadeau Hall. UMFK’s Student Veterans of America is providing this opportunity in partnership with National Geographic, Team Rubicon, and Disabled Veterans of America have made this advance screening possible.

“We hope to provide an opportunity for the public at large to see first-hand how decisions are made from the heart of the Pentagon, to the front-lines, and provide an opportunity for Student Veterans to showcase the opportunities and support that are available at UMFK,” said Duane Belanger, president of UMFK’s Student Veterans Association.

National Geographic describes this series as, “an intimate portrait of the war against violent extremism, and the men and women devoting their lives to it. With unprecedented access to the U.S. Armed Forces, Chain of Command inhabits the rarely-glimpsed innermost sanctums of the Pentagon, the front lines of battlefields across the world, and even the cockpit of a fighter jet on a mission.”

“As this is an advance screening, what I have been able to share with other veterans about it has been received very well,” said Belanger. “Most are amazed that we will have this opportunity on one of the most northern college campuses in the country.”

UMFK will use this event as their first student veterans meeting of 2018 and plan to hold several other meetings throughout the semester. The mission of UMFK Students Veterans Association is chapter growth with the hope that they are able to establish a Veterans Lounge/Center on campus by the start of the fall semester. 

“We hope to bring a cohort of Veterans to the 2019 SVA National Conference to represent UMFK,” said Belanger. “Our recent history has already reaped many opportunities for Veterans at UMFK. Since the December, several scholarship opportunities, internship and fellowship opportunities have arisen. UMFK student veterans now have access to a wealth of employers looking to hire veterans upon graduation.”
