UMFK's 133rd Commencement Ceremony held on May 9

The University of Maine at Fort Kent graduating seniors received their degrees at the 133rd commencement exercises held at UMFK on May 9. University President Wilson G. Hess presided over the ceremony that conferred 163 bachelor degrees and 43 associate degrees.
In addition to awarding the diplomas to the Class of 2015, President Hess conferred Dr. Susan Hassmiller, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, with the honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree. Keynote speaker Dr. Hassmiller addressed the graduating class.
Dr. Hassmiller is a noted educator of nurses, national health leader, and recipient of the Florence Nightingale Award.
She is presently the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation senior adviser for nursing. In this role, she shapes and leads the Foundation's nursing strategies in an effort to create a higher quality of care in the United States for people, families and communities. Drawn to the Foundation's "organizational advocacy for the less fortunate and underserved," Hassmiller is helping to assure that RWJF's commitments in nursing have a broad and lasting national impact.
During the afternoon ceremony, the title, Professor Emeritus, was bestowed upon retired UMFK professor Dr. Steven Selva during commencement. As professor of biology and environmental studies at UMFK, he was a distinguished scholar and a renowned lichenologist. Professor Selva served the campus for 37 years.
Jeremy Bishop, senior class president, addressed his fellow graduates. Bishop is from Montreal, Quebec, Canada and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
Also at the commencement ceremony, recently retired administrative assistant to the UMFK President Naomi Nicolas was honored with the University's Distinguished Service Award for her many years of service to the campus community and local community.
Baccalaureate degrees were awarded to students in Arts and Sciences (11); Behavioral Science (10); Biology (3); Business (23); Computer Applications (4); Elementary Education (3); English (1); Environmental Studies (2); Nursing (82); Public Safety Administration (9); Secondary Education (13); and Social Science (2).
Associate degrees were awarded to students in Accounting (1); Allied Health (1); Applied Forest Management (8); Business Management (4); Computer Science (1); Conservation Law Enforcement (5): Criminal Justice (13); Emergency Management and Homeland Security (3); General Studies (6) and Information Security (1).
