Thoreau's Maine Woods: A Journey in Photographs with Scot Miller

Scot MillerThe University of Maine at Fort Kent's Blake Library and the Acadian Archives/Archives acadiennes have combined their gallery spaces to welcome "Thoreau's Maine Woods: A Journey in Photographs with Scot Miller," a traveling exhibition developed and produced by The Harvard Museum of Natural History in collaboration with Scot Miller. The exhibit will be on display at both galleries from February 9 through March 25.

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Maine Woods by Henry David Thoreau, the Harvard Museum of Natural History partnered with photographer Scot Miller to create this exhibition of contemporary photographs from New England's northernmost state. This is the second time the museum has worked with Miller to create a traveling exhibit based on his photographs. Janis Sacco, Director of Exhibitions at The Harvard Museum, organized the interpretive graphics and Miller's photographs around Thoreau's three mid-19th century expeditions to northern Maine chronicled in the Maine Woods essays: Ktaadn, Chesuncook, and Allegash & East Branch.

Scot Miller is an award-winning nature photographer who found himself challenged by Henry David Thoreau's three landmark expeditions to northern Maine between 1846 and 1857. Miller embarked on a seven year journey throughout northern Maine, from Bangor to the Canadian border, where he photographed and produced high-definition video. The detailed accounts presented in the three Maine Woods essays, guided Miller's travels and photography where he employed patience, passion, and artistry to create a thoughtful portrait of wilderness and change in Maine's “wildest country.”

Miller has had numerous photographs published in a variety of books, including My First Summer in the Sierra: 100th Anniversary Illustrated Edition of the American Classic published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2011, which featured seventy-two of Miller's color photographs. This book received the 2011 Classic Award from the National Outdoor Book Awards, the outdoor world's largest and most prestigious book award program.

Miller's fifth book is a companion to the Thoreau's Maine Woods exhibition. The Maine Woods: A Photographic Journey Through an American Wilderness by Henry David Thoreau, includes eighty-six of Miller's photographs and published by Levenger Press in Fall 2013.

UMFK's Blake Library and the Acadian Archives/Achives acadiennes is the northern most venue on this exhibition's journey, having been previously at the University of Maine at Orono, and is currently at the University of Maine at Presque Isle until mid-January.
