Fulbright Scholar to Speak at UMFK

Dr. Brendan QuinnOn Wednesday, April 12, 2017, Dr. Brendan Quinn will be giving the presentation, “The Impact of Drug Abuse and Addiction on Individuals, Families, and Communities,” in Nadeau Hall conference room at 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Quinn, from the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, has spent the past year at the University of California in Los Angeles working on his project, “Effectively Addressing Rising Methamphetamine Related Harms in Australia:  Learning from Innovative American Research and Responses.”  His lecture at UMFK will explore current research vis-à-vis licit and illicit drug trends and issues.

“It is an indescribable honor to have Dr. Brendan Quinn, a Fulbright Scholar, visit us as UMFK and discuss his area of research: methamphetamine addiction and recovery,” said UMFK Associate Professor of History and Education, Dr. Paul Buck. “Given the vast impact of substance abuse and addiction on society and individuals in the St. John Valley, and in Maine at large, we stand to learn a great deal from Dr. Quinn.”

“The health and well-being of our community is very important to us at UMFK,” said UMFK President Dr. John N. Short. “It gives us great pleasure to bring a scholar of this magnitude to the St. John Valley to discuss such a relevant topic.”

“Furthermore, having participated twice myself in the Fulbright program, including a year of dissertation research in Québec City while a doctoral student in history at the University of Maine, I always do my best to bring to light the ineffable significance and relevance of high-level international exchanges such as Fulbright,” said Dr. Buck.

This presentation is conducted through the Fulbright Scholar Program’s Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF). OLF enables Visiting Scholars to share their research interests, speak about their home country, and exchange ideas with U.S. students, faculty, and community organizations. Through these lectures, universities forge relationships with the Fulbright Scholar Program, Visiting Scholars, and the Visiting Scholar’s home and host institutions.
