UMFK to host regional round for National Spelling Bee

The University of Maine at Fort Kent Office of Community Education will host the Northern District (Aroostook County) Scripps National Spelling Bee competition for middle school students on Friday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in Fox Auditorium.

The 2015 competition is sponsored by Maine School Administrative District #27, under the supervision of Deanna Potter, M.S.A.D. #27 District Librarian.

The winners of the Northern District spelling bee will continue on to the state of Maine competition. The state winners advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be aired on ESPN this spring.

Joseph Zubrick, UMFK Associate Professor of Oral Communication and Theater, will be the bee master for the competition. Judges for the event will be Jennifer Parizo, Community Education AmeriCorps VISTA; Linda Deprey, UMFK Development Officer;and Sofia Birden, Associate Director of UMFK's Blake Library.

“We are very pleased to be hosting this event on our campus again this year.” states UMFK Dean of Community Education, Scott Voisine. “This spelling bee is an event that celebrates academic achievement and provides young people the opportunity to hone skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.”

The spelling bee is free, and open to the public.
