The University of Maine at Fort Kent's Presidential Lecture Series committee will host a writing contest entitled, Where I'm From. The committee will accept submissions from UMFK students, staff, faculty, and alumni, or community members.

Poets and songwriters and memoirists have waxed endlessly on this theme. Now it is your turn. Create a piece of writing that beautifully or cryptically describes Where I'm From: moments in your life, a specific experience, or a particular view on life that makes you who you are. Your writing may focus on the name of a street, city, state, or country. It may be a language, a form of speech, or a particular food. It could be about someone or something you encountered, either of which influenced you in a significant way. You decide the angle on how you will illuminate a reading audience about where you're from.

Are you up to the challenge of writing a story, essay, story, or poem? If so, then send your very best writing, in 600 words or less.

To enter, simply send your original never-before-published story, essay, story, or poem . The deadline to submit your typed, double-spaced entry is 12 noon on Friday, March 21, 2014.

Please include a cover sheet with your contact information, including name, e-mail, phone number, along with a 100-word biography. E-mail submissions must include “Where I'm From” as the subject heading. The contest limits one entry per person.

All submissions will be read by a jury. The three winning entries will be included in the 2013-14 Presidential Lecture Series' Potato Chips ChapBook, which will be released at the UMFK Scholars Symposium on Friday, April 25, 2014.

Winners of the contest will be announced on Friday, April 4, 2014. Send your entry to Diane Gagne, division of nursing administrative assistant, by e-mail at: diane.gagne@maine.edu

For more information on the contest, please contact Dr. Jenny Radsma at 834-7586 or by e-mail at: radsma@maine.edu
