The Student Support Services TRIO program at the University of Maine at Fort Kent understands the hard work, effort and determination students put into their academic goals, but also into their communities. With that in mind, the fall 2013 TRIO Student of the Semester has been awarded to Chantel Bernier of Frenchville, Maine.

Chantel currently is a sophomore in the nursing program at UMFK. However, Chantel actually is a semester ahead of her peers because she took advantage of the opportunity to take classes in high school through the Early College program.

Chantel has focused on learning from an early age and graduated as the Valedictorian of her Wisdom High School class. Chantel's focus on her academics is evident. She maintains a grade point average of 3.9. In addition to being a full-time student, Chantel works approximately 20 hours a week as a CNA at Ridgewood Estates. She also works as a tutor at UMFK and is a Leader for the Supplemental Instruction program.

Chantel is involved in other campus activities, such as the Newman Club, of which she is currently serving as president. In her spare time, Chantel enjoys hunting, skiing, running, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.

The Student Support Services TRIO program at UMFK serves 160 students as they pursue their academic, personal, and career goals. The Student Support Services TRIO program is designed to improve academic performance, increase student motivation, and increase persistence and retention rates.
