The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host its annual “Earth Day – Every Day,” as a kick-off of Earth Day, to be held on Friday, April 11 at the Sports Center from 12:45 to 2:10 pm.

Approximately 43 first-graders, from the Fort Kent Elementary School, will attend sessions geared to teaching topics in ecology, environmental science, forestry, and biology.

Kids will hear a presentation on forest fire prevention by “Smokey the Bear.” Activity stations will be set up on how worms can be used to recycle organic waste; learning the basic concept of recycling; impact each organism has on the entire ecosystem; how to create a bird feeder; identification and planting of trees; learn about toads and the role they play in the environment and how to construct a toad house; observe animal tracks; and learn about different sources of energy.

"This event provides UMFK students an opportunity to work with the elementary school students in their fields of study and at the same time gives the first-graders a chance to come to campus and with hands-on activities learn some interesting facts in environmental students, biology and forestry. The event is a lot of fun for all who are involved," said organizer Leslie Kelly,.

“Earth Day – Every Day” originated in 2006 by the UMFK Greening Committee.
