UMFK to host "Earth Day - Every Day"

The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host its annual “Earth Day – Every Day,” as a kick-off of Earth Day, which occurs on Friday, April 17 at the Sports Center from 12:30 to 2:10 p.m.

Approximately 55 first graders from the Fort Kent Elementary School will attend sessions geared to teaching topics in ecology, environmental science, forestry, and biology.

Kids will hear a presentation by Richard Martin of the Maine Forest Services and get to meet Smokey the Bear. Organizers will set up activity stations to explore worms; learn the basic concepts of recycling; discover the impact of water pollution; learn how to create a bird feeder; identify trees; observe animal tracks; learn about different sources of energy; explore Earth's composition by making art; learn about toads and the role they play in the environment; and how to construct a toad house.

Associate Professor Dr. Doris Metz helps to organize this event by requiring education students to assist in and lead these activity centers. “This is an excellent opportunity for UMFK's teacher candidates to work directly with students in a different capacity. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved. Of course, these activities encourage the care and preservation of our Earth,” said Dr. Metz.

“Earth Day – Every Day” originated in 2006 by the UMFK Greening Committee.
