UMFK welcomes Dr. Steven D. Gammon as the new Vice President for Academic Affairs

The University of Maine at Fort Kent is excited to announce that Dr. Steven D. Gammon of Billings, Montana has accepted the position of vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Gammon begins his responsibilities at UMFK on July 1.

Dr. Gammon comes to UMFK with more than thirty-years teaching, academic administration, and research experience. He has held the position of vice president, dean, department chair, professor, and director.

Gammon served most recently as academic vice president at Rocky Mountain College where he directly supervised more than 80 faculty members, two associate academic vice presidents, the Registrar's office, Information Technology, Library and the Office of International Programs. Prior to Rocky Mountain College, he was dean of the college of arts and sciences, at Eastern Oregon University. While Dr. Gammon was chair of the chemistry department at Western Washington University, he oversaw a $5M construction project to remodel chemistry laboratory, classroom, and office space.

Throughout Dr. Gammon's career in higher education, he has advocated for shared faculty governance by increasing the transparency and inclusiveness of operations and decision making. In addition, his experience with strategic planning and assessment, budgeting, academic programming, regional accreditation, and advising will be important as he steps into the role of VPAA at UMFK.

Dr. Gammon shares, “The Students and the classroom were my first academic love and continue to shape my academic values.” UMFK believes Dr. Gammon's experience and student-centered values make him ideal for this important leadership position.

UMFK President John Short commented, “I am delighted that Dr. Gammon will be bringing us such exceptionally strong faculty accomplishments and experiences in academic administration. His leadership will be vital to us as we build upon our commitment to providing high-quality academic programs for the citizens of our region and the entire state of Maine.”

Steven Gammon earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Bowdoin College. His Ph.D. work focused on inorganic synthesis and chemical education with specialization in computer assisted instruction.

Dr. Gammon responsibilities will include oversight of the academic curriculum of the institution, providing leadership to the faculty and managing the processes through which teaching is conducted and administered at UMFK. He will insure that the curriculum appropriately reflects the mission of the campus and that it is as current as possible in terms of disciplines and delivery.
