"To Kill a Mockingbird" cast group photo during rehearsalThe University of Maine at Fort Kent’s Theater Troupe will present, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,” based on the book by the same name by Harper Lee. The performance will run from Thursday, April 11 to Saturday, April 13, with evening shows at 7:00 pm and a matinee on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

The play is set in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama. It is the coming of age story of Jean Louise "Scout" Finch.  A slow sleepy Southern town is embroiled in scandal as a young black man is accused of assaulting a white girl. Atticus Finch is Scout's father and the lawyer assigned to defend Tom Robinson. The trial makes the hot weather combustible as the Finch children struggle to understand as townspeople turn on them and as they see their father through different eyes.

“The play does have pejorative racial language in it,” said play director, Caryn Cleveland-Short. “This classic American literature is as timely as it was when it was written. Ultimately, it is about respect for others.”

Leading into the opening of the play, nearly 500 high school students from throughout the County will get a first look at the performance.

“The book by the same name is part of most high school required reading,” said Cleveland-Short, “so it is fortuitous that students will be able to see it play out on stage.”

Tickets for the show are $10, though UMFK students can attend for free with a valid student ID. For more information about theater at UMFK or this production, please call (207) 834-7557.
