UMFK's Dr. Tanya Sleeper Named Faculty Associate to UMaine's Center on Aging

The University of Maine at Fort Kent is pleased to announce that Dr. Tanya Sleeper was recently named a Faculty Associate for the UMaine Center on Aging.

“The UMaine Center on Aging is an all-university, interdisciplinary center on aging with service, education, and research focal points,” said the Center’s director, Dr. Lenard Kaye. “The Center works to continually inform our public and private infrastructures of the implications and consequences of an aging society. The Center educates segments of the current Maine labor market and meets the specialized work force needs of Maine' s young people preparing for health and human service careers in service to the aged.”

Dr. Sleeper will join a select roster of educators, researchers and practitioners drawn from UMaine schools and departments as well as other University of Maine System institutions and organizations in the larger educational, business, corporate, and health and human service communities. The Center represents a formal site where her work in the field of aging can be facilitated and disseminated to the broader Maine community.

“I am honored to be selected to serve as a Center of Aging Faculty Associate, where collectively, with my peers and colleagues, we can work to advance the needs of the aging population through education, training, and research opportunities,” said Dr. Sleeper.  “As a staunch advocate for the older adult population, I look forward to these collaborative efforts that contribute to aging initiatives in Maine and nationally.” 

Gerontology and aging studies is a particular passion for Dr. Sleeper. Aroostook County is continuously ranked as one of the oldest counties in the United States, so her research is acutely fortuitous for this region. Due to her research prowess, Dr. Sleeper was also selected to join the editorial board for the Journal of Comprehensive Nursing Research and Care.

“Dr. Sleeper’s continued emphasis on research and professional development is exceptional,” said UMFK Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steve Gammon. “She sets a wonderful, professional example for her students.”
