UMFK Professor Instrumental in Changing the Face of Cybersecurity in Maine

The Partnership in Cybersecurity Summit was a joint effort between Dr. Albert and representatives from private firms as well as the Maine Emergency Management Association (MEMA), the United States Coast Guard (USCG), and other federal agencies.

“Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the cybersecurity dialog, share and learn about cybersecurity threats and solutions, explore partnerships and other collaborative efforts, all with the goal of advancing the cybersecurity profile of Maine and its citizens,” said Dr. Albert.

The Visioneering Workshop is the result of a grant Dr. Albert received under the Maine Space Grant Consortium to create a three-day event that brings together academic, government, business leaders and practitioners.

“The goal is to use the event to generate ideas and potential solutions for addressing the cybersecurity and applied research growth opportunities in the region,” said Dr. Albert.

These two events come at a critical time when data breaches are happening at major retailers, credit-reporting services like Equifax, and hacks from foreign countries never seem to cease.

Governor Paul LePage recently issued a proclamation in order to raise awareness of the importance of cybersecurity in Maine. These events stem from that proclamation and will help guide future cybersecurity research initiatives in Maine. 

“It is extremely gratifying to witness and remain a vital contributor to the continuing growth and expansion of cybersecurity higher education and research in Main,” said Dr. Albert. “I never would have guessed in 2002 when I started serious exploration of cybersecurity for UMFK that those efforts would contribute so greatly to the creation of these events and to the advancement of cybersecurity in Maine.”
