Garett Sherman new athletic dirctor at UMFK athletics department on August 2, 2018The University of Maine at Fort Kent is excited to announce the arrival of their new athletic director, Garett Sherman. Mr. Sherman comes to UMFK from the University of Maine where he was their assistant women’s basketball coach.

“I’m very thankful for this opportunity,” said Mr. Sherman. “My family and I really liked the small-town atmosphere when we visited; everyone was so kind to us. I look forward to building relationships on campus and in the community as well as leading UMFK’s athletics program.”

“Mr. Sherman comes to UMFK with extensive experience in coaching at universities large as small,” said UMFK President John Short. “He is very student-focused, which was a priority for us as we looked to fill that position.”

Mr. Sherman has spent the last eleven years at the collegiate level holding various positions such as: Assistant Athletic Director, Head Women's Basketball Coach, Head Men's Basketball Coach, Assistant Soccer Coach, and Assistant Professor of Physical Education. He is eager to move into this position in order to have a greater impact on student-athletes. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health & Physical Education and a Master's degree in Administration and Supervision from Frostburg State University in Maryland.

“As UMFK Athletics looks to restructure and grow, Mr. Sherman will be tasked with leading campus in an examination of what athletic conference will best suit UMFK and their students,” said President Short. “We need to join a conference that will facilitate more home games, thus allowing our student athletes to focus more on campus engagement and their academic studies.”

“With our athletic program we want to focus on academic excellence, making an impact in the community and preparing our student athletes for success in life,” said Mr. Sherman.

Mr. Sherman began at UMFK on August 1st.
