Students' Achievements to be featured at UMFK Scholars' Symposium

The University of Maine at Fort Kent’s eighth annual Scholars’ Symposium will take place on Wednesday, April 19 and Thursday, April 20 on the UMFK campus.  The theme of this year’s event is “A World in Movement.”

The two-day showcase of students’ academic achievements begin Wednesday, April 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Nadeau Hall conference room with a film showing of “The Good Lie” followed by a panel discussion led by Dr. Michael Racque, Bates College sociologist.  

On Thursday, April 20 the symposium will begin with a welcome from UMFK President Dr. John M. Short at 8:15 a.m. in Fox Auditorium.  The welcome will be followed by keynote speaker, Abdi Nor Iftin, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Mr. Iftin’s stories are personal narratives on his life growing up in a country shredded by a civil war. As a recent immigrant to the United States and a Muslim, Mr. Iftin has received requests to speak at TEDx events, universities and colleges in Maine, and high level conferences at the United Nations in New York.

At 9:15 a.m., attendees will hear from students who will present on in Fox Auditorium until 10:30 a.m.

“Lightning Talks,” five-minute presentations that will focus on a single topic, example, idea, project, or technique by UMFK faculty members beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium.

Following lunch in Nowland Hall, the symposium will move to the UMFK Sports Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for the hugely popular poster and project session, where students display poster presentations of their research or projects, and answer questions about their methodologies and findings.
