October is Information Literacy Awareness month, which is the theme for the October exhibit at the Blake Library gallery. Sofia Birden, gallery curator and reference librarian at Blake Library, will install a three-dimensional view of what information literacy means. The exhibit will be on display from Monday, October 6 through Friday, October 31.

Birden says, "I have wanted to set up an exhibit on information literacy ever since Governor LePage approved the Maine Proclamation back in 2012." Birden was a member of the group of librarians from across the state of Maine who wrote the proclamation and petitioned to make October the official month for Information Literacy Awareness.

Birden describes the exhibit as a place to walk through and have information all around you. She says, "I have grand ideas about this exhibit, and I hope what's in my head will come out in the exhibit. I want people to not only see and read about the various aspects of information literacy, but also feel it."

The exhibit will highlight the federal and state proclamations, as well as show three-dimensional works that represent information literacy and are made of various materials.

She looks forward to combining her experience in these two fields of study to create an artistic display in a subject she knows a lot about.

Birden adds, “I didn't want to just slap a few posters on the wall and say 'ok, this is information literacy.' I wanted to show what information literacy is from an artistic point of view.”

Birden earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts and a master's degree in information science.

Sofia resides in Fort Kent.
