The University of Maine at Fort Kent has been named a 2014 Military Friendly School. The Military Friendly Schools list honors the nation's top colleges, universities and trade schools that do the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success.

The announcement was made this week by Victory Media, a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business that has been serving the military community since 2001.

UMFK's inclusion on the list of Military Friendly Schools is a reflection of its commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students.

UMFK has actively begun recruiting members of the military, and their dependents, throughout the state of Maine at National Guard units and other military installations. Next week, the University's admissions representatives will travel to the U.S. Marine Corps Camp Lejeune, in North Carolina, to present at its National Job Fair & Education Expo.

Service men and women, and their dependents are largely an untapped student market. UMFK is dedicated to meeting the educational and career needs of both the traditional and as well as a non-traditional students within that market segment.

The 1,868 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools have world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility and other services to those who served.

Now in its fifth year, the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools is compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 schools, nationwide, approved for VA tuition funding.
