The University of Maine at Fort Kent Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Eloi and Laurie Pelletier Memorial Scholarship through their generous gift of $250,000.

The family wishes to provide this memorial scholarship in recognition of the quality education UMFK provides its nursing students and the great need for professional nurses. It has been said, if you really want to know what is happening with a patient, ask the nurse, the nurse knows. The nurse is with them all day, caring for them through everything.

UMFK nursing students with a 3.0 or better who are from Aroostook County are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. Students from outside Aroostook County may also be considered.

Eloi Pelletier was born in Daigle, Maine. He was a businessman working in construction, running a gravel pit and a steam shovel. He was self-educated and learned through his children’s education. As his children would learn something in school, Eloi would want to learn about it as well.

Laurie was born in Canada and became a US citizen in 1931. She ran a tourist home in Fort Kent. Laurie attended mass every morning, was sweet and nurturing, and always had a smile for everyone.

“The UMFK Foundation works with the UMFK Financial Aid office each year to award scholarships to students in all programs and from all over the globe,” said UMFK’s Foundation Officer, Shannon Lugdon. “Over $100,000 has already been promised to UMFK students in the upcoming academic year.”
