The University of Maine at Fort Kent Alumni Association recently honored Norman Martin in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the community at the annual Alumni Association brunch in Nadeau Hall on September 19, 2021.

Norman Martin received the 2021 Outstanding Alumni Award honor based upon his impact to the UMFK community, the lives of others, and his contributions and service in our communities.

“As we go through life, we meet individuals who leave an impact in our lives, our friendship, our respect for their contributions to service in our communities. When an individual does this in a quiet, humble way without wanting recognition for outstanding character, we note that their deeds are worthy of praise and accolades. It is for this reason that I nominated Norman Martin.” said Melford Pelletier, alumnus from the class of 1967.

Norman Martin, a lifelong Maine native, graduated in the class of 1967 from Fort Kent State College, known today as UMFK. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, majoring in math and science. After graduation, he taught Junior High science at M.S.A.D. # 33. Norman left teaching five years later and to join his father in the family business, Frank Martin & Sons, Inc. He later owned and operated Martin Ford, Inc. in Fort Kent from 1988 until he sold the business in 2011.

He dedicated his time and talent to many groups and organizations within the greater Fort Kent area. Shortly after his college graduation, Norman began by serving as board member and dedicated volunteer of Lonesome Pines Trails. Through the years, he served on many boards, often in leadership roles, including M.S.A.D # 33 Teachers Association, the Fort Kent Jaycees; Fort Kent Federal Credit Union (known as Acadia Federal Credit Union); Northern Maine Medical Center; UMFK Foundation; Fort Kent Lions Club and the Fort Kent Outdoor Club.

In 2017, Norman Martin was honored by the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce as “Citizen of the Year” in recognition of his outstanding contributions of time, talent, and effort for the welfare of the area communities. He has taught the importance of volunteerism to others including his own children. Martin continues to serve on the Fort Kent Outdoor Center Board of Directors, and he also is also a long-standing member of the Fort Kent Lions Club.

In his free time, he enjoys biking, alpine and Nordic skiing, and snowmobiling.

Norman has been married to his wife, Janet, for 52 years. The couple has three grown children, Kelly, Jamie, and Lynn, and five grandchildren.
