UMFK Student Support Services Recognizes TRIO Students

The TRIO, Student Support Services Program, at the University of Maine at Fort Kent held its eighth annual recognition banquet on April 28, to honor students involved in the TRIO program. UMFK Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Tanya Sleeper provided the welcome address.

The TRIO, Student Support Services Program, at the University of Maine at Fort Kent held its eighth annual recognition banquet on April 28, to honor students involved in the TRIO program. UMFK Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Tanya Sleeper provided the welcome address.

The banquet's keynote speaker was Christy Daggett, senior manager for the Aroostook County Action Program Workforce Development. She shared her experience on first-generation and low-income students. A true advocate for higher education. Christy Daggett has experience in public service and federal grant coordination. She resides in Aroostook County with her family.

The following TRIO students were recognized for their individual support and student work as a peer tutor, note takers, or as a Supplemental Instruction Leader. Brittney Beaulieu (St. David); Chantel Bernier (Frenchville); Rebecca Brown (Bowdoin); Samuel Brumer (Lake Park, Florida); Frantzceau Germain (Amityville, New York); Malachi Hayden (Bangor); Odean Irons (Fort Kent); Sterlin Jourdain (Les Cayes, Haiti); Carlee Pinette (Caribou); and Kathryn Sharp (Caribou), Each student was presented a certificate.

The 2016 Student Support Services awards were given to the following students: These awards recognize students for their successful transition to higher education and their proactive approach to academic achievement.

Most Successful Freshman Award: Max Jandreau (Fort Kent)

Honorable Mention: Whitney Gaudet (Bucksport) and Keano Williams (Jamaica, New York)

Most Successful Sophomore Award: Rebecca Brown (Bowdoin)

Honorable Mention: Ashley Deflaminis (Holden) and Samantha Jackson (Junction City, Oregon)

Most Successful Junior Award: Odean Irons (Fort Kent)

Honorable Mention: France McDermott (Madawaska) and Adriarna Ross (Peru)

Most Successful Senior Award: Chantel Bernier (Frenchville)

Honorable Mention: Olivia Bouchard (Greenville); Samule Brumer (Lake Park, Florida); Courtney Bubier (Jay); Sterlin Jourdain (Les Cayes, Haiti); Mequeline Smith (Boynton Beach, Florida); and Jessica Walker (Fort Kent)

Isabella Arguetta (Ellsworth) was recognized for her exemplary participation and involvement with the Student Support Services program during the academic year.

The following students were honored for their significant improvement to academic achievement and recognizing their increased efforts towards becoming a successful student: Ahkeim Forbes (Kingston, Jamaica); Chelsea Frey (Weld); Melanie Marquis (Madawaska); and Adriarna Ross (Peru).

The following students were recognized for their significant determination and persistence towards academic achievement and attaining their academic goals: Whitney Gaudet (Bucksport); Kelsey Gifford (Bradley); Kayla Pendleton (Searsmont) and Camryn Smith (Fort Kent).

The following students were recognized for their outstanding motivation. They have the drive and willpower to overcome any obstacles they might encounter to do well and achieve their academic goals: Isabella Arguetta (Ellsworth); Kenadi Labbe (Fort Kent); Max Jandreau (Fort Kent); Deanna Raye (Pembroke); Katelyn Roy (Fort Kent) and Mary Trudeau (Warri Delta State, Nigeria).

This TRIO student was recognized for her exemplary participation in the Student Support Services program, as well as on-and off-campus involvement, has shown skills in leadership, team building, communication, as well as persistence towards her academic goals and success as a student. Jessica Walker was named the 2016 TRIO Student of the Year.

Jessica Walker is a transfer student from the University of Maine at Orono back in 2012. She is a first-generation college student enrolled in the nursing program.

Jessica wrote in her nomination essay, “The Student Support Services assisted me in developing the skills needed to manage the overwhelming multifaceted demands of higher education. She adds, “The confidence and empowerment I gained from my TRIO family was a huge part in my decision to pursue a difficult and challenging academic career.” She will graduate from UMFK on May 14, magna cum laude and will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Ten TRIO students were awarded a TRIO scholarship this year.

The following TRIO students were recognized and presented with their Student Support Services cords, which they will wear at graduation. TRIO graduate and senior class president Elizabeth Gilman closed the evening's ceremony.

The recipient of the TRIO program drawing was Mary Trudeau. She won a laptop computer, which was kindly donated by Father James Nadeau.

TRIO Student Support Services is funded through the Department of Education under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRIO Programs because there were initially three programs. TRIO programs are designed to help low-income, first-generation, and/or disabled students, under the guidelines of the American with Disabilities Act, Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America's economic and social life.

The Student Support Services Program's focus is to insure that their participants have a realistic chance to persist in school and graduate from UMFK. To accomplish these objectives, they provide services to enhance students' academic success, personal skills, and social skills.
