Awards and scholarships were presented to deserving University of Maine at Fort Kent students at the senior class banquet and awards convocation held on Friday, May 8 in the UMFK Sports Center.

The annual event, held the evening prior to commencement, is designed to honor graduating students for outstanding achievement throughout their years at the University and to award underclassmen, who are continuing their education at UMFK, with financial assistance in recognition of their hard work and campus involvement.

The first awards presented were the outstanding senior honors given by the UMFK Student Senate and the University's Alumni Association. Receiving the top student award, voted upon by members of the Student Senate, is Irene Levesque-Rowe (St. Jacques, New Brunswick, Canada). The UMFK Alumni Association Outstanding Senior Award was presented to Bryan J. Piaseczny (Sheldon, Vermont).

The Joan T. Sylvain Award, which honors outstanding education students who are working on a second degree, was presented to Arlene Lillian McIntyre (Dominion, Nova Scotia, Canada).

Carlee Ann Pinette (Caribou, ME) was awarded the Hubert J. Thibodeau Award, which is given to an education student who has a record of good scholastic achievement and shows promise to be an excellent future teacher.

The Teacher Education Award, given in recognition of academic excellence and expected future contributions within the area in education, was presented to Andrea Rebecca Nadeau (St. Francis, ME) and Anna Quin Peabody (Boulder Creek, California).

Jeremy Ryan Shapiro (Elmer, New Jersey) was awarded the Performing Arts Award, which is given to a student, who has made major contributions and outstanding achievements in university theatre and musical productions.

The Gretchen Prize in Fine Arts, which recognizes a student who shows exceptional initiative and industry in the visual arts, was awarded to Krystal Lee Paradis (Frenchville, ME).

Aimee D. Holabird (Fort Kent, ME) was named the recipient of the Roland A. Burns Award in the Arts and Humanities. The award is given in recognition of academic excellence and expected future contributions within the area of the arts and humanities degree program.

Jessica Ann Madore (Fort Kent) was named the recipient of the Grindle Award, which is presented annually to a student who shows great promise in the area of the social sciences.

Kayla Michaud (Madawaska, ME) was honored with the Behavioral Science Award, which is given to an academically-strong graduating senior, who has either majored or minored in the behavioral sciences program.

Devon Cote (Connor Township, ME) was presented the Environmental Studies Award for his outstanding achievement and work in the major area of study.

The Biology Award was presented to Chandra M. Von Merta (Limestone, ME) which is given to a student in recognition of academic excellence and expected future contributions within the area of biology.

For his outstanding achievement and positive attitude toward learning, forestry student Shane Maroon (Waterville, ME) was presented with the Applied Forest Management Award.

The Information Security Award was presented to Shawn Dubay (Caribou) for his excellence in the study of information security.

Jessica Ann Madore was named the recipient of the Computer Applications Award, for her high grade point average in computer science courses and future growth and development potential in the computer applications field.

The Business Management Award was presented to Irene Levesque-Rowe for her outstanding work completing the degree program.

Curtis John Picard (St. Agatha, ME) received the Criminal Justice Award for his academic achievement and demonstrated active in the discipline.

The Conservation Law Enforcement Award was given to Connor Jonathan Lapierre (Hamlin, ME) in recognition of academic excellence and future contributions within the area of conservation law enforcement.

The student award in the Rural Public Safety Administration program was presented to Bryan J. Piaseczny.

Three awards were presented to UMFK nursing students. The Outstanding Traditional Nursing Student Award was presented to Emily McDermott (Waldoboro, ME). Cindy Lynch-McNett (Topsham, ME) and Jessica Anne Mosher (Winslow, ME) were awarded the Outstanding RN-BSN Student Award. The Outstanding Accelerated Nursing Student Award was presented to Timothy Todd Bair (Caribou).

The Faculty Academic Achievement Awards were presented to Valedictorians Jessica Ann Madore and Jonathan Chasse (Van Buren, ME) and Salutatorian Andrea Rebecca Nadeau.

Andrea Lynn Dumond (Wallagrass, ME) earned the Associate of Arts Academic Achievement Award for her outstanding work toward attaining her two-year degree.

The Dean's Award, which is awarded to a junior or senior student with a high grade point average and has demonstrated scholarly attributes, was presented to Christina Lynn Beaulieu (Fort Kent).

Presidential Awards for Academic Excellence, awarded to students who have achieved the Dean's List for seven consecutive semesters at UMFK, were presented to Joseph Belanger (Fort Kent); Matthew R. Charland (Palmer, Alaska); Jonathan Chasse (Van Buren, ME); Aimee D. Holabird; Jessica Ann Madore; Kayla Michaud; Andrea Rebecca Nadeau; Krystal Lee Paradis; Alan Daniel Pelletier (Madawaska); Cassandra M. Pelletier-Dobbins (Auburn, ME) and Jared Thomas Roy (Winterville, ME).

Adam Robert Caron (Fort Kent Mills, ME); Shawn Cyr (Millinocket, ME); and Mitchell Allan Roi (Bucksport, ME) were presented the Thomas S. Pinkham Memorial Scholarship.

Melissa Noelani Bauning (Berwick, ME) was presented with the John L. Martin Environmental Scholarship.

The Haenssler Prize, a scholarship award, was presented to Travis Thomas Powers (Presque Isle, ME).

The senior class honored Diane Griffin, assistant professor of nursing, and Dr. Doris M. Metz, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, with the Outstanding Faculty Award. Joyce Plourde, accounting support specialist, was honored as the Outstanding Staff Award for the 2014 - 2015 academic year.
