UMFK Environmental Speakers Series Present Professional Engineer and Geologist, Michelle Hersey

Michelle Hersey, a licensed Maine professional engineer and certified geologist, will speak on Environmental Consulting in Aroostook County as part of the University of Maine at Fort Kent's Environmental Speakers on Friday, March 15 at 11 a.m. in the Nadeau Hall Teleconference Room. The talk is free and open to the general public.

Hersey's talk will center on tanks, subsurface investigations, environmental site assessments, spill prevention, control and countermeasure plans, geoprobe investigations, environmental sampling, and brownfields, among other topics. A brownfield is a property where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

Hersey is president and owner of County Environmental Engineering, Inc. in Cross Lake, Maine. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine (2006), and a Master of Science in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Geology from the University of Maine at Presque Isle (2011).

She has more than six years experience of environmental work in Aroostook County, including work experience as a consultant for the Northern Maine Brownfields Initiative; operations and maintenance of remedial systems for the 2012 gasoline spill in Wallagrass, Maine; and long-term monitoring at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.

The Environmental Studies Speaker Series at UMFK regularly brings speakers to campus. These presentations cover such topics as water quality, waste management, wind power, endangered species, forestry and marine science. The program is offered in collaboration with the UMFK Environmental Studies degree program. Speakers only are scheduled during the academic year.
