UMFK to host book tour for noted Canadian author

Noted Canadian military historian and author W.E. Gary Campbell will hold the Aroostook County presentation of his latest historical novel, “The Aroostook War of 1839: An unexplored chapter in the storied history of Canada and U.S. relations,” with a book tour at the University of Maine at Fort Kent Acadian Archives/Archives acadiennes on Monday, April 8 at 7 p.m.

The event is free and the public is invited to attend the presentation and signing of “The Aroostook War of 1839.” Gary Campbell will read selected passages from the book as part of the event.

“The Aroostook War of 1839” is a multifaceted story of friction, greed, land grabs, and rivalry, this tale of a border dispute and near-war is an intriguing chapter in history of Canada and the United States. The border dispute, which nearly resulted in war, was eventually settled by the Ashburton-Webster Treaty of 1842. The novel is volume 20 in the New Brunswick Military Heritage Series.

Author Campbell has a passion for military history, with a logistics flavor, and has written article for several journals on this subject. A retired Major, W.E. Campbell, served as an army logistics officer for more than forty-two years in the Canadian Army (Militia), Canadian Army (Regular), and the Canadian Forces.

He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Western Ontario, a master's degree from Royal Military College, and a Ph.D. from the University of New Brunswick.

Campbell also is the author of “The Road to Canada: The Grand Communications Route from Saint John to Quebec.”
