UMFK adds secondary math to teacher certification program

On June 11, the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) recertified the secondary education programs at the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK), and also approved the new program for secondary education mathematics, according to Chair of Education Division Bruno Hicks.

“They find our education program does an excellent job to prepare student teachers to be classroom ready. The students in our courses spend over 250 hours in our program before they start a student teaching practicum,” said Hicks.

The northernmost university in Maine has helped mold educators since the school's inception in 1878. Today, UMFK provides instruction for public secondary school educators using the latest technology and advances in learning. The UMFK Education Division's Secondary Education program offers an approved course of study leading to certification of high school teachers in the following endorsement areas: mathematics, life sciences, computer technology, social studies, modern and classical languages and English/language arts.

Students receiving their certification for teaching have achieved further success as educators in Maine, Canada, and across the world.

Angel Martinez Loredo, higher education specialist for the MDOE, wrote in a letter to UMFK President Wilson Hess, “Congratulations on this recognition of the fine teacher preparation programs offered by the University of Maine at Fort Kent.”

The team of experts that reviewed the various programs praised the university's ability to produce “classroom ready” teachers. The education division also received recognition for providing teachers the opportunity to practice their skills in authentic settings and addressing the diverse and special needs population of students at levels higher than state expectations.

Hicks said, “We have a strong component of lab faculty that work with us that are actually teachers and administrators from the local public school systems.”

One reviewer wrote, “The team was impressed with the caliber of the faculty and students and the depth of the partnerships inherent in the program. The team commends the program for its efforts to actively promote diversity, despite the recognized difficulties with doing so due to geographical location. Finally, it was clear that the unit has strong support from the administration of UMFK.”
