UMFK and St. John Valley Community Photography Club Exhibit at Blake Library

An exhibit of photographic works by ten members of the UMFK and St. John Valley Community Photography Club is on display in the Blake Library Gallery through the end of January.

The exhibition is an insider's look at each individual's experience as a photographer. More than 95 photos are on exhibit, ranging from portrait, landscape, nature, still life, wildlife, abstract, just to mention a few. The exhibit can be viewed during regular library hours.

The following club members are displaying their work: UMFK student and club president Ivon Portellez; Dr. Doris Metz; Jane Michaud; Kaitlyn Martin; Damion Metz; Connie Michaud; Jill Beaulieu Doucette; Louise Bouchard; Garry Bouchard; and John Metz.

Damion Metz currently is the youngest club member at nine years old and is a fourth grader at Fort Kent Elementary School. Damion enjoys taking pictures and making videos of things that he likes. Damion has been involved with the club and its activities since he was seven. He has displayed ten examples of his photography and hopes that everyone will come and enjoy his display. All ten club members are anxious for everyone to see their selections hanging in the gallery.

“Photography is about capturing the moment so it can be remembered and cherished forever,” says John Metz, UMFK Photography Club faculty advisor. Metz further states that the photography club was established as a community photography club in 2009 and was asked to become a campus club, in order to provide another element of visual arts for the UMFK community. The club actively captures campus events for UMFK Student Activities to help provide high quality pictures for the campus.

The photography club joined as a campus club in May of 2011 and has grown from seven members to more than 65 members. The club has campus, community, and online members who continue to support its mission to spread the enthusiasm of photography: to create a welcoming venue, where community members can assemble to share the passion for photography; to set-up a schedule of meetings, discussion topics, training sessions or seminars, and field trip experiences; and to provide a framework to build essential skills, enhance skills, and provide a venue to display their work.
