UMFK and St. John Valley Community Photography Club Exhibit at Blake Library

An exhibit of photographic works by sixteen members of the University of Maine at Fort Kent and St. John Valley Community Photography Club is on display in the UMFK Blake Library Gallery through the month of February.

The theme of the exhibit is “Sharing captured moments.” The exhibition is an insider's look at each individual's experience as a photographer. More than 100 photos are on exhibit, ranging from portrait, landscape, nature, still life, wildlife, abstract, macro, portraiture, just to mention a few.

The following club members are displaying their work: UMFK student and club president Jessany Munoz; Dr. Doris Metz; Jane Michaud; Kaitlyn Martin; Ivon Portellez; Damion Metz; Rose Libby; Connie Michaud; Michele Johnson; Louise Bouchard; Garry Bouchard; Emily Rooney; Christina Beaulieu; Sholah Mullins; and John Metz. The youngest club member is six years old and is a first grader at Fort Kent Elementary School.

“Photography is about sharing captured moments so it can be remembered and cherished forever,” said John Metz, UMFK Photography Club faculty advisor. Metz described how the club began, saying that the members established the photography club as a community photography club back in 2009 and the university asked them to become a campus club in May of 2011 in order to provide another element of visual arts for the UMFK community. The club actively captures campus events for UMFK Student Activities to provide high quality pictures for the UMFK community.

The UMFK and Saint John Valley Community photography club has grown from seven members to eighty-seven members. The club has campus, community, and online members who support its mission. Its mission is to spread the enthusiasm of photography, to create a welcoming venue where community members can assemble to share the passion for photography, discuss topics, train, and experience field trip and provide a framework to build essential skills, enhance skills, and display their work.
