A ranking service, CollegeChoice.net, recently released their list for the Most Affordable Online Colleges for Bachelor's Degrees, and the University of Maine at Fort Kent is in the top 50 nationally.

UMFK ranked 45th in the nation, and was one of only two Maine universities to make the list.

The cost of earning a bachelor's degree has increased 1,200 percent over the past three decades, according to a 2012 Bloomberg report.

At UMFK, the school has been able to limit the skyrocketing costs by offering courses online.

University President Wilson Hess said, “Universities face many budgeting challenges, but our creative use of online courses has allowed us to help keep costs down for students seeking a bachelor's degree.”

The University of Maine at Fort Kent, which has been operating since 1878, is located on the northern border of the United States in Fort Kent, Maine. According to CollegeChoice.net, the university has just over 198 students enrolled in its online bachelor's programs and the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges provides accreditation for the program.

The US News and World Report ranks The University of Maine at Fort Kent at 105th for Best Online Bachelor's Programs.

According to the CollegeChoice.net writers, “The University of Maine at Fort Kent offers six online bachelor's degrees. The online degree offerings include fields such as accounting, nursing (RN to BSN), arts and sciences, criminal justice, healthcare administration, and public safety administration.”

The university utilizes more than 50 online instructors and tuition for online bachelor's degrees starts at $383 per credit.

Online bachelor's degrees allow students a useful set of tools to balance school with other responsibilities, flexibility in time and geography, and students can often complete an online program in less time than traditional bachelor programs.

The researchers based their rankings on total cost, number of online degrees the university offers, and only considered schools with the highest form of accreditation, regional accreditation. They aggregated their data the websites of the universities, and from a variety of publications such as U.S. News and World Report and the National Center for Educational Statistics.
