UMFK Environmental Studies Speaker Series to feature Eric Giberson

Eric Giberson present at UMFK Environmental Studies Speaker Series The University of Maine at Fort Kent Environmental Studies Speaker Series will host a presentation by Eric Giberson on Friday, February 16 from 11 a.m. to Noon in UMFK’s Nadeau Hall conference room.

Giberson will speak on investing in soil health to increase farm profitability and protect water quality.  The event is free and the public is encourage to attend.

According to Giberson, “Healthy agricultural soils are the foundation of sustainable cropping systems and water quality.  An overall strategy for long-term soil health involves reducing the amount and intensity of tillage operations within the cropping system.  In addition, a comprehensive soil health strategy must incorporate adequate soil cover through the use of living cover crops and plant residues to build soil organic matter, enhance beneficial soil biology and reduce soil erosion, compaction, sedimentation and deposition.”

Mr. Giberson has served the St. John Valley as the District Conservationist with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) since April 2016.  He also worked for NRCS in the Penobscot County as a soil conservationist, out of the Bangor Field Office, for nine years, and worked as a crop consultant in western and northern New York State from 2000 to 2007.

Eric Giberson earned a Master of Science in Agronomy in 1998 and a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Agriculture in 1995, both at the University of Maine.

He is a native of Aroostook County, grew up in Fort Fairfield, Maine, on his family’s seed potato farm.  Mr. Giberson currently resides in Fort Kent.
