“This book explores a little-known aspect of Franco-American community life—the issue of political engagement,” said Dr. Lacroix. “Recognizing these communities’ full complexity and local particularities, this study furthers our understanding of French-Canadian culture’s encounter with the civic institutions of the host society. Far from being marginal socially and politically, ‘Francos’ were visible and their presence was felt. Their American journey reveals growing political action and challenges a narrative that focused on the inaccessibility of power and influence.”

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, thousands of farming families from the Province of Quebec settled permanently in the United States. They sought to reestablish their social life and cultural institutions south of the international border. The communities they established were not insular; a slow process of social and cultural integration led these immigrants to engage with mainstream American society. They also entered the turbulent U.S. political arena to ensure ethnic representation and protect their distinct interests. Over time, class interests displaced ethnic identity as the primary factor driving voting patterns.

“Dr. Lacroix is a skilled historian and researcher,” said UMFK President Deb Hedeen. “We congratulate him on another successful book release and we are excited to see his future publications.”

The Acadian Archives will be holding a book signing event on December 3rd from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Participants may stop by during that time to chat with Dr. Lacroix about his research or the Archives. Proof of vaccination or a negative test within 72 hours prior to the event are required. Masks must also be worn at all times.
