Author Den Latham to present on the UMFK campus

The University of Maine at Fort Kent Waneta T. Blake Visiting Professor, in conjunction with, the Environmental Studies Speaker Series will welcome Author Den Latham to present on campus, Tuesday, April 22 and Wednesday, April 23.

On April 22, Latham will do a reading and presentation on his book, “Painting the Landscape with Fire: Longleaf Pines and Fire Ecology” in the Nadeau Hall Teleconference Room at 7 p.m. in Nadeau Hall Teleconference Room. The presentation is free and open to the community. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Latham will conduct a public writing workshop on April 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Nadeau Hall Teleconference Room. He the fourth Waneta T. Blake Visiting Professor.

“Painting the Landscape with Fire” explores the unique Southern biosphere of longleaf forests. Throughout Latham beautifully tells the story of the resilience of these woodlands and of the resourcefulness of those who work to see them thrive. Fire is destructive in the case of accidents, arson, or poor policy, but with the right precautions and safety measures, it is the glowing life force that these forests need,” according to a news release by the University of South Carolina Press.

Latham earned a master's of art degree in English at Middlebury College in Vermont in 1989.

Den Latham is a nature writer. His articles have appeared in South Carolina Wildlife, Pee Dee Magazine, Sandlapper, and the Aroostook Review. Latham is a founding member of Friends of Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge.

He is involved with conservation activities and natural resources education program in his area. Latham interests also include writing, painting, backpacking, and kayaking. He is a three-time member of the US East Surf Kayak Team.

The visiting professorship at UMFK is designed to bring noteworthy writers and scholars to the college to work with students through courses, workshops, and seminars. The professorship is offered by the UMFK Division of Arts and Sciences English program.

The Environmental Studies Speaker Series at UMFK regularly brings speakers to campus. These presentations cover such topics as water quality, waste management, wind power, endangered species, forestry and marine science. The program is offered in collaboration with the UMFK Environmental Studies degree program.
