The Maine NEW (National Education for Women) Leadership Summer Institute has chosen University of Maine at Fort Kent nursing student Mary Trudeau to attend the undergraduate student leadership training program from May 28 through June 2, on the University of Maine campus.

“I was very pleased to receive the news of my acceptance into the program. My understanding is that only 28 students are accepted each year even if there are hundreds who applied. I am lucky and honored to be one of those who were selected. Many thanks goes out to UMFK TRIO Program Director Lena Michaud for encouraging me to go for it,” said Trudeau.

The leadership training event is an intensive six-day residential program that will include presentations from politically active women throughout Maine, a visit with women legislators and policy advocates at the Maine State House, and workshops for participants to actively develop leadership skills, such as public speaking, advocacy, and networking.

Trudeau said, “As the saying goes "Knowledge is Power." There are going to be great women leaders who will address us. I cannot wait to learn more on my own identity as a woman and a potential leader, and I hope to build up leadership skills that will be useful to me in my professional career. Most importantly, I hope to learn the skills of empowerment to be an active voice for women' rights, especially in education.”

She currently volunteers at the Fort Kent CHIPPY Center, the early learning and preschool program, as well as the American Red Cross. She is an active member of the Student Nurses Organization (SNO). Trudeau wants to become a nurse educator and an advocate for women's rights, educational parity, and opportunity by working through the community and political arena.
