Waivers

Under certain circumstances, tuition may be partially or fully waived for University employees, high school students, and war orphans. Information for specific waiver programs is provided below. Tuition Waiver Program (Foster Youth) - FAME

This program provides free tuition to certain foster children, and adopted children/wards under subsidy from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The student must be attending a Maine public college/university.

Tuition Waiver Program (Public Servant) - FAME

This program provides free tuition to certain children of firefighters, law enforcement officers or emergency medical services persons killed in the line of duty. The student must be attending a Maine public college/university.

Tuition Waiver for Persons 65 and Over (UMS/UMFK)

The Board of Trustees authorizes the waiver of tuition for persons sixty-five and over who wish to register for undergraduate courses on a credit or non-credit basis at any campus of the University of Maine System. Enrollment will be subject to space availability. For more information, contact the UMFK Business Office at (207) 834-8650 or the UMFK Financial Aid Office at (207) 834-7605.

Veteran's Dependent Waiver

Tuition may be waived for persons qualifying under MRSA 37 B, Chapter 7, Section 505, as amended 2002, P.L. c.662.

Waivers for Native American Students

Waivers covering tuition and mandatory fees are available for members of the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Tribes and other persons who have resided in Maine for at least one year and who have at least one parent or grandparent on the census of a North American Native American tribe or with a band number of the Micmac or Malacite Tribes. In addition, room and board charges are subsidized for those eligible students residing in University residence facilities.

  • Students who are approved to participate in the Native American Waiver program will be required to complete the Native American Tuition Waiver Agreement and the Student Release Form. Please contact the UMFK Native American Coordinator, Leslie Kelly, at (207) 834-7522 or by email at lesliek@maine.edu to complete these final steps of the process. 

Native American Scholarship Program funds when combined with other forms of assistance provided cannot exceed total costs of education. Additional qualifications may apply.
