UMFK Students

If you’re looking for a sprawling, rural Maine college, the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) is the perfect place for you. UMFK offers a unique learning environment at the crossroads of Maine, Québec and New Brunswick and features an eclectic mix of outdoor vistas and convenient access to cosmopolitan epicenters across two countries. We invite you to explore everything our university has to offer you!

Cultured Student Body

With a total undergraduate enrollment of just over 1,400 students, we are a small university with equally small class sizes. As a student at UMFK, you’ll benefit from one-on-one support from our faculty and staff. Sixty-one percent of our classes have 20 or fewer students, giving them the opportunity to receive the guidance and personal attention they need.1

At UMFK, you’ll have the opportunity to work side-by-side with your creative peers and develop meaningful and close-knit relationships.

If you are interested in immersing yourself in cultures different from your own, UMFK is the proud home of the highest percentage of international students of any New England university. Additionally, our campus is just a few hours away from culturally diverse destinations, like:

  • Québec City
  • Bangor, ME
  • Coastal Maine
  • Acadia of the Lands and Forests

We are the only university or institution located at the center of French culture, offering students of all backgrounds and heritages the opportunity to study and live in a bilingual community.2

Affordable Education

According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition for the 2017-2018 school year at public universities was nearly $10,000 for in-state residents and over $25,000 for out-of-state residents.3

Students who choose to attend UMFK will be happy to know that the tuition for the 2017-2018 school year at our university was $7,965 for in-state residents and only $12,075 – less than half the national average – for those coming from out of state.

About 74 percent of our full-time undergraduates receive some form of need-based financial aid. The average scholarship or grant award for these students is $6,036. In 2011, the average debt total for our graduates was $9,505 – four times less than the current national average!4

The Rural Experience

The “rural university” model that UMFK has created is one that other New England campuses try to emulate because they see the incredible world leaders our programs produce. Through our programs, students can take advantage of the most affordable, technologically-enhanced and professionally-focused higher education opportunities in the nation.

We strive to mold our graduates into globally prepared leaders to provide aid and leadership to rural communities spanning the globe.

Sports and Recreation

At UMFK, we have thriving and robust athletic programs. Our UMFK Bengals have won back-to-back national championships in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and have hosted some of the nation’s top athletes. Many attend our university while preparing for the Winter Olympics!

From a recreational standpoint, our northern location offers students like you the unique opportunity to participate in many outdoor activities, including:

  • Cross-country running
  • Wilderness camping
  • Winter skijoring
  • Cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship (biathlon)

Even during summer months, our average temperatures never rise higher than 76 degrees, making our campus the perfect location for year-round outdoor fun.5
