About the History & Political Science Program

puzzle pieces with parts of the UMFK and UMPI logos signifying the partnership between the two campusesThe University of Maine at Fort Kent has partnered with the University of Maine at Presque Isle to offer a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in history or a concentration in political science. Faculty in the program are committed educators and nationally recognized researchers whose broad expertise allows students to gain an understanding of American, European, and non-Western history. Courses not only give students a comprehension of past events, but also help them to analyze and critique complex and multifaceted evidence, to identify bias in contemporary and historical sources, and to understand the construction of historical narrative itself. Such skills enable our graduates to pursue a variety of careers that require sophisticated research and analytical skills, critical thought, and the ability to present well-written arguments.

Courses are offered in a number of ways: face-to-face on the UMFK campus, online, remote connection with UMPI campus classes, and as a hybrid. Completion of this degree program does not require travel to Presque Isle; students may complete the program entirely in Fort Kent.

Students enter this program as UMFK students for the first two years of study. After finishing the first two years of the program, students are enrolled at UMPI to complete the degree.

Current and future students on the UMFK campus are supported in this program through a team advising approach by means of a professional advisor from the UMFK campus and a faculty mentor from the UMPI campus.
